just now catching up. thanks so much, cosima for your perspective on this. i really appreciate your review of the whole event and your thoughts as a european. i think your comment "I think it is a great privilege to live in a democratic country, and not only have we the right to vote but the responsibility. If you do not participate in the most basic form of democracy, may be you don’t deserve to live in one." is so true. just this past week i was invited to a lady's house and she said she purposely keeps herself ignorant of the candidates because she doesn't really care. it took a great measure of self control for me not to rant at her for her irresponsibility when so many people long for the privilege she utterly disregards.

I can't remember when we have had much over a 60% turn out in a hotly contested local election. We Americans seem to take a lot of our freedoms for granted. I wish I could say not voting is our worst neglect, but it isn't. Human nature being what it is, we won't be sorry until it is too late. The polling numbers for Barack are good, but not what he needs to win the election. The undecideds have not made their choice yet. The period before the election is going to last until November. A lot can happen in a little over 3 months. Right now I see McCain as a weak candidate, with Barack not having the strength to take him out. It should get interesting after the parties select them both officially.
